Hi, I’m Cate.
I began my psychotherapy journey in the UK in the 1990s, first training in individual psychotherapy at Leicester University, then specialising as a couples therapist with Relate UK. After relocating to County Mayo, Ireland, in 2003, I deepened my expertise further by qualifying as a supervisor and trainer. I also founded Mayo Couples Counselling Services to meet the growing need for relationship support in the west of Ireland.
My passion for this work comes from personal experience. I married young, without the knowledge or skills to navigate the challenges ahead. Like many couples, we loved each other but weren’t prepared. We hadn’t grown up with strong models for lasting relationships—nor were we taught these skills at school. Our marriage ended, despite the love and hopes we had for our family.
My early experience of couples counselling was a turning point. It was the spark that fuelled my passion for helping others and ultimately led to a long career specialising in couples therapy—and later, to helping other therapists strengthen their skills in this rewarding field.
Over the years, I kept hearing my clients say, “If only we’d had this guidance sooner.” Those words echoed my own early thoughts and struggles.
This powerful “if only” inspired me to create practical, user-friendly resources designed specifically for couples in the early stages of commitment—when change is easiest, motivation is high, and tools can make the biggest difference.
I developed a Relationship/Marriage Preparation Course that therapists can deliver to couples during this critical window. It’s now being used by dozens of therapists around the world.
Working with couples at any stage is both a challenge and a privilege. Even the most stuck relationships can shift with expert guidance and the right tools. When couples are motivated, meaningful progress is within reach—and often begins from the very first session.
